Sunshine and Sunnies!

It’s been a bit quiet on the blog in the past month as I’ve been struggling to overcome the back injury that caused me to forgo my scheduled marathon in Port Angeles.  But, while I haven’t been able to run, I have stayed plenty busy and it’s time to catch up on all things in the running and gear related blogging world.

The first order of business is a product review of a very cool pair of sunglasses that I have been testing over the past few weeks.  And, yes the sun has even cooperated (on occasion) in Seattle to actually allow me to test the new Bahamas1 Sunnies from XX2i Optics.

In the Box

I selected the Crystal Black with Polar Grey lenses as my test product.  Starting with the opening of the box, these shades did not disappoint.  Before even getting to the glasses the box contained a very impressive hard shelled case which included an interior foam molding, a cloth/dust protector case, and a lint removing cleaning towel.  Considering that some manufacturers of high-end (and far more expensive) sunglasses do not include a case, this was a welcome offering.

A close inspection of the glasses reveals a very high quality product.  This picture has not been filtered but I have zoomed in to provide a close-up view of the construction and finish.  These glasses are smooth to the touch and provide incredible clarity – this can be seen rom the reflection in the lens.  I did not use any special lighting effects – a simple snapshot with my iPhone 6 camera taken on the kitchen counter.

The full specs on these specs from the product page on the XX2i Website

FEATURES: Lightweight and durable frame. Polarized lenses with 8K optical technology. Glare cutting polarized lens technology – 100% UVA and UVB Protection.

WARRANTY: Lifetime Warranty! No questions asked, you break or scratch them, send them back to be replaced for a nominal shipping and handling fee!

Heading for the Sun

As most of you know, we are located in the beautiful (but not always sunny) Pacific Northwest.  Seattle gets a substantial amount of wet and overcast weather, but when the clouds clear, the sun and scenery are simply spectacular.  After about 6 months of rain or so, surely we were due a break…and, fortunately, the sun started to show up with the arrival of the new sunnies!

With a few day trips and visits planned as well as the daily commute to the city, I was able to thoroughly test the glasses through May and early June.  What struck me first was the clarity of the vision.  After examining them externally before trying them on I had high hopes based on the material, construction, and lenses.  I was immediately impressed by the definition that these shades provide.  Even on a partially sunny day the glasses enhanced my view while providing the protection from the direct or even indirect sun.

Taking them into the field, I found them wonderful during periods of direct sun, reflection, and even on overcast days.  In terms of activities, I used them while driving, walking, hiking, and daily wear in and around the house and office as depicted in the gallery below.

For the record, some of the locations used for this review include:

  • The backyard on an early evening, partially cloudy day.
  • The Starbucks mobile truck in front of global Starbucks HQ
  • Lake Crescent on the Olympic Peninsula near Port Angeles
  • Marymere Falls in the Olympic Rain Forest
  • Hurricane Ridge at the Olympic National Park

The glasses were excellent on all occasions.  I did remove them at one point during the hike in the rain forest because the trees were so dense it was actually too dark to need any kind of sun shading device!

They even look decent with a dodgy hat (we found it again in Costco and this time it was coming with us…the hat that is!)

Fit, form, function, and fashion.  These sunglasses truly check all boxes for me.  I love the overall feel and the vision clarity is incredible.  XX2i also stand by their products with a lifetime guarantee and a 365 day return policy.  If you don’t like them return them for a refund.  I used these as casual glasses per the classification.  I would expect them to be just fine for running but I cannot confirm as I was not able to run during this evaluation period.

The XX2i website is very well organized and they have models for other sporting interests as well as general casual use.  I am particularly interested in the cycling glasses and am considering adding a pair to my must-have cycling gear collection.

Thank you Mai!! They really are great glasses and I’m thinking about using the discount for a pair of cycling glasses. Hope you are doing well…I have some blog catching up to do…cheers!

Hi Jamesie, I have a favourite pair of sunnies, which I bought for my alpine trek a few years ago. They are factor 4, for walking on the snow or glaciers, but it means you can hardly see a thing when you go into the shade! The rubber is starting to come off, but I keep sticking them back together! Hopefully they’ll last a few more years. 🙂

Having the right pair of shades really helps, especially with all the alpine activity! I’m definitely going to look into the cycling options but I really love this pair from XX2i and I’m sure they’d work for running too! Thanks for stopping in to say hello, will be to normal blogging schedule soon hopefully!! Cheers!!

Thanks Donna!! I really like these glasses – they look, feel, and function as a very high-end pair of shades and that 50% is a great deal. Not sure how long it will last but it is still on the updated Gear Discount page that came out yesterday so hopefully it sticks around for a while because I want to check out the cycling line!!

Yeah, they really were very impressive…I may even opt-in again if we have a different model to test in the future and I’m going to check out their cycling line as well. Haven’t tried my Oakleys yet but these feel every bit as good in terms of quality.

James, you look like a rock star in those shades! I hope your back is beginning to feel better. Keep up the great work!!!

Cheers Dewey!! Not quite back rockin’ the trails just yet but I’m hopefully getting close, maybe next week! These glasses are amazing though whether you run, walk, hike or just use them for daily stuff!
