Motivational Music Monday #22

By | July 17, 2016

As we’re not on the road heading back from a marathon racecation weekend, we can resume the normal routine of getting the Motivational Music Monday post ready in time for a bright and early start to the week, except for those of you where it might be Tuesday already 🙂

As I mentioned we don’t have the excitement of a race weekend to discuss, though the full Missoula Marathon report is on the way this week.  It was also, for the first time in forever, a completely zero mileage running week.  I usually get back out within 5 days or so after a marathon with just a light run and I had originally planned to run a few miles this weekend.  But, Missoula completed the sequence that I needed to be a fully vetted member of the Marathon Maniacs and represented a milestone race being the third 26.2 in three months and second in three weeks.  It was definitely time for a break and a reset for both me and Wifey as we start thinking ahead to the next couple races and subsequent training cycles.

Despite a long drive back from Missoula and no running, it was a great week.  This weekend involved some live music, a great bike ride on the trail, and a few laughs as we got hooked into the Pokemon phenomenon that is apparently sweeping the universe.  Hooked is probably over-stating it but we had our son, AJ, explain it to us and off we went looking for furry tailed lizards, weeblies, and peekaboos (I’m totally making those names up which has been driving AJ crazy but we had a few smiles out on the trail as a family).

We didn’t spend all weekend looking for these critters.  Last night Wifey and me headed down to Marymoor Park in Redmond for a really cool outdoor concert that featured a couple of classic 80’s defining bands – Howard Jones and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.  The headline group was actually Barenaked Ladies but we went for the 80’s bands and had a fabulous evening out in the park!  Paula has a great summary over on her site with plenty of fun pics!  Food, wine, beer, and 80’s bands!

Which, makes for a convenient segue into the music theme for the week and Motivational Music Monday #22!

Week 21 Reader Picks

Thank you to everyone for joining in and sharing a comment or song.  Love hearing from everyone and the diverse choices in music – I’ve discovered some great songs, singers, and bands since I started this series on the site and I hope everyone enjoys reading the various selections, even if not all of them are not quite your cup of tea 🙂

I am absolutely loving my new job at Starbucks and while it keeps me crazy busy, they truly know how to treat their staff (or partners as we are called) and I feel very lucky and blessed.  We’re keeping the favorite Starbucks (or other) beverage (or food) shout-out section if you would like to join in!

  • Java Chip Frappuccino in the summer with the cookie straw, which sounds absolutely fabulous and I must go find!! From Katrina at Running Bos(s)
  • Orange and Chocolate loaf which can be found on the UK Starbucks menu from Mum and my sister-in-law Karen in the Motherland!
  • Petite Vanilla Bean Scones from me…these tiny morsels of heavenly goodness simply melt in your mouth and can be paired with just about any preferred coffee, though a medium roast works really well.  And, they are tiny so you can have 3 or 4, or 8 of them before you even register it on the calorie counter 🙂

Thank you also to Chelsea and Mike for stopping by and leaving a comment – great to hear from you as always and much appreciated!

This week’s pick!

An easy one this week given that we were at an eighties concert last night!  Howard Jones and OMD put on a fabulous show and while back in the day my 80’s preferences were more on the hard rock side (think Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Queen, Metallica, Crue among many others), I enjoy all the different styles from the era.

Here’s one that all y’all know – ok well most y’all and it’s ok to admit you belt this out once in a while…that includes the fellas…admit it now.  And, surely you’ve heard of Pretty in Pink? (Which by the way just turned 30!!!!)

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – If You Leave

Here’s a fun short live snippet that Wifey captured last night (same guys!) and they played a fabulous show.

Come on now, you can sing along, it’s ok 🙂

If you leave, don’t leave now
Please don’t take my heart away
Promise me just one more night
Then we’ll go our separate ways
With hours left time on our sides
Now it’s fading fast
Every second every moment
We’ve got to–we’ve gotta make it last

I touch you once I touch you twice
I won’t let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we’d still be friends someday

With that, running resumes on Tuesday, but I hope you enjoyed the diversion.

I wish everyone a great week and don’t be shy sharing your tunes and guilty treats!

  • Any 80’s favorites to share?
  • Any signature songs to movies that you love to run along to or just blast out in the car?!
  • What was your last concert?!

‘Till next time,

Run safe, run strong, run happy!

That song totally brought me back to the 80s! I looooved Pretty in Pink and that song. I loved so many songs of the 80s, but the Bangles’ Eternal Flame might be the ultimate 80s song for me.
Sounds like you had a very fun week!

We did have a great weekend and a lot of fun reliving the 80’s and there are so many to choose from…will definitely add your signature 80’s tune to the list next week! Have a great week!

All time favorite song ever….. Jessie’s Girl by Rick Springfield. I always wanted to be wanted as much as Jessie’s girl 😉 A very strong playlist indeed! So many great songs. Thanks for sharing. I also enjoy all your made up pokeman names. So much fun to torture our kids! Glad you had a great time at the concert. Have you done a dirty chai latte yet? I make one almost every day at home. Adds a little umph to my day.

Great chocie Renee, that song is one of Paula’s favorite 80’s tunes as well…have never tried one of those drinks so will have to give it a shot!

Another new one for me! As you know the 80s was my favourite decade for music. This week I’m picking a good song from a comical hair band, We’re Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister. Did you know they did a Christmas gig and played carols with their music instead of the originals? I saw the DVD and it was hilarious!

Glad you are liking the trip back to the 80’s the past couple weeks!! Love the hair bands, could make a whole play list and that’s a great choice…wow, Twisted Swister, that takes me back!! Have you heard of “We wish you a metal christmas and a headbanging new year?” It is a whole collection of rock/metal bands playing Christmas tunes. Run Rudolph Run from Lemmy and Santa Claws by Alice Cooper are awesome!! I’ll definitely be having a metal holiday themed week on music monday later in the year! Hope everything is going well. Best.
