Motivational Music Monday #46

Motivational Music Monday Catchup

Two weeks ago, I started this post with…”another week, another race, and another Wednesday publishing of the world famous Motivational Music Monday series.”  Well, maybe world famous might be stretching it a bit.  But it is cool to see the various hits on the site from around the world.  You can check my recently published Monthly Miles and Dorky Data post for the evidence!

Work has been crazy at coffee central as I got word of a new project coming my way.  With several reviews to prepare blogging time has been sparse.  But, I’m slowly catching up a bit!  I mentioned race.  Two weeks ago was indeed a race weekend for us as we joined 5,000 other runners at the annual Seahawks Run At The Landing 12K.  It was a super fun event.  Obviously the theme is centered on the Seahawks and the 12s.  For those of you not familiar with the sport, team, region, or religion…12s is the official designation of us crazy die-hard Seahawks fans.

But, back to the race.  12K is a bit of an odd distance so I didn’t take this one too seriously.  I treated it more like a weekly tempo run and aimed for a 8:15-8:30 pace.  It was an out-and-back with the midway point being a circuit of the amazing Seahawks training facility and practice fields.  I finished in 1:03:56 for an average pace of 8:22 on a very scenic course that ran the rolling hills of Lake Washington Boulevard.  It was a bit hillier than I expected but conditions were perfect, crisp and clear for the hour or so run.

There was plenty of fanfare with Seahawks linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, Seagal cheerleaders, Blue Thunder, and Blitz the mascot getting the race started.

You can also check out my full race recap on BibRave.

Speaking of BibRave, I’ve also been busy completing some product testing.  You might have noticed my last 2 posts were related to reviews of the Road ID Elite ID Wristband and the Eagle Creek Pack-It Active Sport bags.  I enjoyed using and testing the new gear and it gave me an opportunity to get the review section of the site organized.

I also picked up a new Garmin!  Seriously, I mean another GPS toy.  If I didn’t work for the greatest coffee company on the planet, I swear I would be campaigning for a gig with Garmin!  I’m not sure how many Garmin gadgets I have in the collection these days but Garmin, if you ever need an ambassador…raises arm enthusiastically!!

Here it is:

A Garmin Edge 520 bike computer.  It went on sale in the US at the beginning of April and while our weather has not exactly been favorable to cycling, I couldn’t resist.  I’ve made it out for all of two rides so far but it’s awesome.  Look for some more details coming soon.  It not only integrates with Strava, it gave me a 60 day premium membership upgrade to Strava…which, in turn, gives me even more running and riding stats, data, and metrics!

Time to take a look at the playlist.  I think this list is getting a bit long so I’m likely going to move the historical list to a dedicated page.  But, for this week it’s in the normal place.

Week 45 Reader Picks

Thank you to everyone that commented last week!  Got a lot of likes and appreciation for the trip back to the hair bands of the eighties!

Keep ’em coming, I’m always looking for more to add to my Spotify Library!

Coffee and Stuff

Starbucks has gotten a little media attention this past week with the limited time offering of the Unicorn Frappuccino.  Anyone else notice it came out the week of the Boston marathon?  Any significance – not really, though runners at Boston are said to be chasing the Unicorn.  I’ll admit I never did try one even thought there was talk about it all week at coffee HQ.  If you did happen to try one, I hope you enjoyed.  It looks quite fabulous, I must admit.

My selections have been more centered on our single origin aged coffees…and a shortbread cookie here and there 🙂

Beer…that too.  This weekend, I enjoyed a dark chocolate, coffee infused stout from one my favorite locals.  This is a Feather Weather by Blackraven Brewery in Redmond.  Apparently, they are hosting a Flock Party at their brewery in a couple weeks….hmmm.

The new Garmin cycling toy I mentioned gave me an idea for this week.  You’ve seen many pictures of the trail that we are so fortunate to run and ride.  Last year, I mounted Paula’s GoPro to the front of Bluey and went for a ride up to Arlington to shoot some extended video of where you will typically find us training.

Here’s the result – we have an access point less than 1/2 mile from our house.  The full trail extends about 32 miles start to finish:

And, here’s the official video which is this week’s Motivational Music Monday selection.

Twenty One Pilots – Ride

  • Did you chase the Unicorn, either at Boston or Starbucks?!  Maybe you were racing in London, Salt Lake City, La Jolla, Iowa, or Olathe, Kansas – yes it was the Garmin marathon this weekend too 🙂
  • Do you like to bike?
  • Songs, coffee, beer, wine, anything else…you know the drill.

‘Till next time,

Run safe, run strong, run happy!

21 pilots is a pretty cool band, I like their song “Ride,” and my brother and I like “Car Radio,” because our car radio is really missing from our car. 🙂 there’s a pretty good beat for running, too, not that I would know anymore 😉
    Great reviews.
Also, your blog is indeed known around the world, so it’s pretty world famous 🙂
That frappacino looks kind of poisonous, but the idea is cute.
That beer on the other hand, just looks good!
No recs from me this time. Pretty mellow on my end.
Nice job at race the landing! Hope your half this weekend goes well.

Ah! But I could actually get a Garmin for my bike, because I do like to ride it and tend to ride a lot. You could do a review of your gps and tag it and maybe that way you can also end up on Garmin’s radar 🙂

yes, Garmin bike computers are very good…they have got much better over the past couple years…the new 935 running/triathlon watch looks pretty cool too but i cannot justify that kind of investment when i bought 2 new watches the past 2 years!

Hi Dorothea…thanks for stopping by! Great to hear from you!!! It is a fun song, they have a couple others as well that we listen to once in a while. Will have to check out Car Radio! I’m sure that frap is quite dangerous…I never did try it and it was a limited time offering so will have to wait ’till next year or the next one! The beer, yes, that was indeed good 🙂 Hope you are doing great!

That’s what I’m saying Mikey…hopefully Garmin check in and send me a tester, in exchange for a fair and honest review of course 🙂 That route is very flat, for the most part. There is one section that is a steady grade for 4 miles or so but while I often hit on the bike it has to be a very long run for me to make it that far…at least 18 miles roundtrip. Hope you’re having a great week, cheers!

I can’t believe you haven’t tried the unicorn frappuccino! I haven’t either, so I can’t say much. lol. I love to ride my bike too. Nice video of your route. It looks like a nice trail.

    1. James Post author

I know, shame on me…I mean they were raving about it at HQ all week but I’m not much of a frappuccino fan, though I should have given it a try I admit! Glad you liked the video…I have probably covered ran the equivalent of coast to coast across the US in terms of miles riding and running up and down that trail over the years!!

  3. J Wilson

Loved the video, looking forward to getting out on the trail in about four weeks!! That is a very smart bike gadget as you say you can never have too many!!! Mum

    1. James Post author

Glad you liked…credit to PK on the video editing skills…I just rode the bike. We actually put it together last year but hadn’t really had a chance to share it yet. It did come out well…will have to do more. Yep, just about a month now and you’ll going on our trail adventures with us 🙂

  4. Chris

Nice route! Is there any elevation gain or loss on it (you can use one of your Garmins to find out!).

Beer: Tommyknocker Peachwood ale (it doesn’t taste like peaches it is aged with peachwood)

Song: Iggy Pop – Lust for Life (even though the song is about Iggy Pop’s life as a heroin addict it still has a good beat)

    1. James Post author

Cheers Chris…will check out the song and add that beer to the list for next week! It is a great trail to run/ride. It’s mostly flat with some mild climbs. The return leg has about a steady uphill grade for almost 4 miles but nothing crazy. If you ride the whole trail out and back, you’ll gain maybe 1,100 ft over 60 miles.

  5. Fallon @ Slacker Runner

No unicorn chasing of either variety on my end. Too slow for Boston and too much sugar for me. I can’t even remember the last time I was on a bike truthfully, it’s been that long. I like Twenty One Pilots- they helped get me through many runs last year.

    1. James Post author

I can’t believe I missed this comment Fallon…so sorry. WordPress on my phone and Chrome browser has been acting weird and I can’t reply to comments directly anymore for some reason. I’m sure they will release an update soon and it will get sorted out. The Unicorn was of course a limited time offer…now you have until May 14 to get the new Frappuccino flavors at happy hour at half price…just sayin’ and they don’t have too much sugar, probably, well not if you get a small one 🙂
